One of the important things to know in sewing is seams. We have been talking about a variety of terms related to stitching and seams is another one of them. A seam is nothing but a term that is used when 2 fabric pieces are stitched. It is considered the building block of a garment. The stitch line which is visible along the seam is called the seam line. Apart from helping build the garment, seams can also be used for decorative purposes.
Types of Seams:
There are several types of seams and as always, seams are carefully chosen according to the type of fabric and the garment's purpose.

These are a few different kind of seams that are used in garments. It might look quite overwhelming to look at a variety of seams at one glance but majorly only few seams are used.
The plain seam and The French seam are the two kinds of seams we learnt in class. Seams necessarily don't have to be machine finished, they can be sewn by hand as well. Let's take a closer look at it shall we?
Plain seam
As the name suggests, this is one of the most basic seams. It is also very easy to achieve this seam. Just join 2 fabrics along the seam line by a line of stitching and voila! you have a plain seam.

This board contains a step by step process on how the plain seam can be made. Follow these few simple steps and you have a beautiful and clean plain seam.
Final plain seam

Using muslin fabric I've joined my fabric along the seam line and sewn it by hand using backstitch to achieve this seam. Apart from muslin I have also tried it on a few other fabrics.
French seam
This seam encloses the raw edges while folding. This seam is usually done on straight edges and best suited for sheer fabrics. This seam also is done on the wrong side of the fabric unlike other seams

This seam is also very simple to achieve and probably only takes seconds to sew it by machine!
Final French seam

This is how my seam turned out. I've again tried sewing it by hand to gain a better understanding of hand sewing as well.
We've made it to the end of the post my curious followers. It is now time for you to try out different seams and keep practicing till the seams turn out neat and clean. Apart from practicing , knowing and understanding the various types of seams are equally important, only then will one know about which seam is required where.
Personally, knowing how to even hand sew seams was quite intriguing to me and with practice I was able to finish the seams cleanly and even work on hand and machine skills. Stay tuned for an informative post, until then,
