Rorschach isn't something new to us now, right? I have dedicated an entire post on my blog just for rorschach inkblot explorations! I must admit that I never in my wildest dreams would have imagined that rorschach inkblots could be used to make whimsical silhouettes. If anything, I was only aware of the fact that it is a psychological test used to analyse client's behavioural patterns. These tests are flamboyant and fun and since making these inkblots are extremely amusing, I figured why not experiment even more but this time in a slightly different way.

Unlike last time where we were free to add drops of paint anywhere on the paper, this time we try to bring out geometrical shapes in those inkblots. What I mean by this is that shapes like the circle, triangle, rectangle, square etc can be juxtaposed on the fashion figure to supplement our explorations. The shapes can also be depicted in the form of cut outs or you are free to add even a 3d element by creating pop up shapes.

Let us look into a few examples to understand this activity in a finer way.......

Explorations:

Stating the obvious, the first step in this activity would be to sketch out your fashion figure, yes! sketch it out, do not use printouts because sketching it out is practice and practice makes perfect, right? You can refer to my previous post to get an idea of how one can start out by sketching fashion figures( link at the end of the post). Moving forward, once the sketch is drafted, go ahead and collocate chosen shapes on the figure.

It could be just one shape or you could choose different shapes.

You can go ahead and cut the shapes but not all the way, just enough to make the shape pop from the paper. If you are not a fan of the 3d element, you can very well just paint the shapes and close the paper so the paint shows up on the other side. Keep in mind the latter will only work if your initial juxtaposition is symmetrical! What if you don't really fancy both of the above mentioned techniques? Why fear when I am here, I got your back. You could also choose to make rorschach paintings on another sheet of paper, then cut out shapes from them and go ahead and paste it on the fashion figure.

sneak peak alert: A little behind the scenes picture here or should I say chaotic harmony?

The paints were jumbled, pieces of paper hovering around probably but the rorschach inkblots came about uncluttered and graceful even in that chaos

Final visuals

I was truly fascinated by the concept of pop ups in this exploration and how whimsical it would make my exploration and so I went ahead and used that technique. I tried making triangle pop ups and as one can see in the image on the left, the pop ups are lifted and look like peaks. I've also cut out geometrical shapes which complement the pop up.

Let's talk colours! The everyoung green seamlessly blends into the mysterious purple. It feels as though it is enchanted. Being on the opposite sides on the colour wheel, this colour duo brings out harmony.

This exploration seeks to bring out femininity. Be it the soft and flowy strokes or the polished curves, it aspires to bring out that feminine energy.

Final visuals

The outburst of red and orange with a splash of that charming pink radiates a colossal energy. It is an analogous colour palette which beautifully brings out that femininity. The glimpses of that lovely pink with the blend of zesty orange and eye catching red brings out the tender and graceful sides of femininity. The pop ups were narrow rectangles combined with a circular cut out beneath it. There is also a downward fold beneath the circle. Once again when the rectangular pieces are pulled upwards and folded, it forms these mountain peak like form. A triangular cut out is placed above the pop up almost representing a neckline.

From the initial arbitrary inkblot explorations to more defined inkblots, we have crossed milestones together. This activity gives us another perspective to work on, another area to exploit and generate copious ideas. I personally adored not only messing with colours but also creating 3d pop ups which adds a distinct touch to the explorations. I am pumped to create more and I urge you all to keep creating too! Keep playing with different shapes and how it can be incorporated in your composition and most importantly don't forget to stay tuned to my blog for yet another set of interesting posts.

More content coming your way, until then,
